Hong Kong’s Ng had already created a piece of snooker history earlier this season when she became the first woman to reach the last 32 of a ranking event at the Championship League, and the 35-year-old has now set a new landmark by beating world number nine and 12-time ranking event winner Allen. She’s into the random draw for the last 64 and will be back on the stage at the Tower Circus on Friday.
Three-time World Women’s champion Ng took control of the frame with a break of 25 which gave her a 36-20 lead. Allen, who won this event two years ago, had a chance to counter in the closing seconds and potted two reds with pinks, but then missed a tricky plant on a red to top corner and his hopes ended.

Ng said: “I’m very happy just to be able to play against a player like Mark. This tournament is so special because of the format and this is a nice venue to play at, it’s a lot of fun. In this event we have four women players and it’s televised so many people can watch around the world. My father was watching in Hong Kong! I hope it helps people realise this is not just a male sport, women can play snooker too and hopefully there will be more to join our sport. Usually snooker is so quiet and tense. At this one I also feel nervous but I just have to focus on my game because the audience can get so excited.”
Ellise Scott, age 14, almost became the youngest woman to win a ranking event match but narrowly lost to Bai Yulu. Scott led 26-24 with less than a minute on the clock but the balls finished in an awkward position where she could barely reach the cue ball with the rest and her attempted pot on a red finished short of the pocket. That handed reigning World Women’s Champion Bai ball in hand and she added the points she needed.
